What to Wear for Spring Photo Sessions | Lexington, KY Styling Guide

    Introduction

One of the most common questions I receive before a session is simple: "What should we wear?"

Choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference in how your photos look and feel. Coordinated colors, soft textures, and comfortable clothing help create images that feel natural, timeless and connected.

For spring sessions here in Lexington, I recommend leaning into soft, earthy tones that complement the landscape as everything begins to green up again.

Below you'll find a few simple color palettes and styling ideas to help make planning your session a little easier.

Best Colors for Spring Photo Sessions

Spring sessions often take place in parks and natural areas where the landscape is soft and neutral early in the season.

Because of this, clothing that leans toward soft, earthy tones photographs beautifully.

Some colors that work especially well include:

These tones complement the natural landscape and keep the focus on the people in the photos rather than the clothing.

I usually recommend avoiding neon colors, large logos or overly busy patterns as they can distract from the moment being captured.

    Couples Styling Inspiration

When planning outfits for a couple's session, the goal isn't to match exactly, but to choose colors that complement each other.

Soft, neutral tones and earthy colors photograph beautifully outdoors and help keep the focus on your connection rather than the clothing. For spring sessions, colors like sage green, denim blue, rust and warm neutrals tend to work especially well.

Try choosing two or three colors from the palette and incorporating them across both outfits.

Textures like knit sweaters, linen fabrics, or light jackets can add visual interest while still keeping the overall look natural and cohesive.

Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. The best images happen when couples can relax, move naturally and enjoy the moment together.

    Family Styling Inspiration

For family sessions, coordination works best when everyone's outfits feel connected without looking matched.

A simple approach is to choose three to four colors from the palette and spread them across the whole family.

Soft textures and layers like knit sweaters, linen dresses, or denim jackets photograph beautifully in natural light and add depth to your images.

If your family includes children, keeping their outfits simple and comfortable tends to work best. Neutral sweaters, dresses and soft fabrics allow their personalities to shine while still fitting naturally within the color palette.

The goal is for everyone's outfits to feel coordinated, comfortable and timeless, creating photos that will look beautiful for years to come.
